After an exhaustive search for a way to move our stuff we have selected a local family run company called ADCO Movers Inc. We got their name from the moveit.ca site, which is a referral service for "Premium, pre-qualified" moving companies who contact you and then bid on the move. A call to moveit to establish what the pre-qualified criteria was we were told that they have a zero tolerance for complaints, and that if a company does not perform according to this criteria they are removed from the service.
The reality of finding information about moving companies is that there really isn't any to be had. We searched the web high and low, even posting on forums to see if anyone had any experiences to share. In the end there was nothing to go on. So we did some soul searching and talked further with the owners of the company and decided that they seemed to be the best choice, for the simple reasons that they've been in business since 1990, they cover the whole of North America, and they can describe every step of the process without flinching or making far flung promises. The contract seems to include everything that we want to see in a contract of this nature, and they'll pick-up and deliver on our schedule - something the more familiar names either wouldn't do or charged a premium for.
The other option was to rent a truck, load it ourselves, drive it ourselves, and unload it ourselves, for a savings of approximately 25-30%. Aside from the fact that we probably wouldn't be able to walk for a week after hauling everything into the house - boxes are one thing, but fridges, stoves, and washing machines are another story - we might just end up like the above picture of another do-it-yourselfer. No thanks!
